Martin joined ESW Knowles in Witton, Birmingham in November 1998 on a wood machining apprenticeship, involving day release to study at North Birmingham College. Scheduled to finish in November 2000, the course provides training in all aspects of woodwork and jointing. At work most of his time is spent making household furniture including tables, cabinets and stools, as well as making windows and gates. In 2000, the skills that Martin learnt at YFA proved invaluable when he discovered a fire in a wood silo at work, which he extinguished using a fire hose. Outside work, he is interested in motor rallying, sometimes working as a Marshall.
