Darren studied at Sutton Coldfield College, initially for a GNVQ 'Art & Design' and later towards a BTec National Diploma in 'Illustrative Design'. Whilst at College he also worked part time at a night club in Birmingham City Centre. In 1998, on leaving College he moved to Dudley and started work at a night club in the town. In September 1999 he applied to become a Firefighter with West Midlands Fire Service and following the extensive selection process was appointed in May 2000. He joined 'initial recruit training' in July and completed the training in November when he joined A1 - Central to begin his probationary service, and has completed his initial six month assessment. He bought a house in Tipton in July 1999 which he has been renovating, and his main hobby is restoring VW Golfs. He owns two models himself - a W reg Mk1 and a B reg Mk2, both of which he is currently restoring.
