The Phonetic Alphabet are words which are used to spell when conditions make it difficult to understand what is being said, such as during a radio transmission. It is used because the letters like 'P' (pee), 'B' (bee) and 'V' (vee) almost sound the same, but it is easy to distinguish between Papa, Bravo and Victor. To show you what we mean, YFA would be spelt phonetically as Yankee, Foxtrot, Alpha.
