Summer / Autumn 2002

return to news archive

Due to the Fire Fighters strike, Aston Young Firefighters Association will be closed until further notice.

We will announce on this page when we plan to reopen, which will be after any strike action has finished. Please keep your eyes on the media for when that may be and check back here for confirmation.

Well, by my calculations yfa dot org dot uk is now over 2 years old and we have simply grown from strength to strength in that time. What started off as a simple one page project with one person learning how to use html programming software has turned into a team of people creating a site containing some 1067 pages accompanied by a total of 762 graphics or pictures in one form or another. The site has seen just under 4,300 people pass through its virtual doors in the 24 months of existence with 75 of the visitors signing the online guestbook. While not huge figures perhaps we could spare a minute and take a look at where some of the visitors have come from; Texas, Canada, Kathmandu, Australia, Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Thailand, Tanzania and Germany, not to mention the many different places around this country. Thank you for making us what we are today!!

Operational Support

2002 has seen the introduction of a new Operational Instructor, Sub Officer Jason Hadley from Oldbury joining the ranks of A2 YFA for which we are all very grateful.

Former Member Number 5 .....

We are pleased to once again report that yet another one of our former members has successfully joined the Fire Service as an operational Firefighter, making the total up to five. So we say a big 'well done' to Simon Cusack who has now joined a watch at Bromsgrove Fire Station having completed the initial training for Hereford & Worcester Fire Service.

Water World
April saw the first social event of the year with 14 members going to Water World in Stoke for a day of water based adventure including over 10 slides, wild rapids and an assault course topped off with the obligatory visit to the golden arches.

The summer displays have once again been and gone and A2 YFA started the ball rolling by attending A3 Sutton Coldfields Fire Station open day in May. With three different displays performed to the with the first open day of the year happening in true A2 YFA style.

Photo Appeal ...

We have been making headway with the photo archives from the years gone by, and we have managed to cover back to 1992 with the ultimate intention of going all the way back to our birth in 1987. But we have a problem, we are desperately short of pictures from recent years, particularly 1999 and 2001. If you are a current or former member and have any photos at all from those years please let us know using email address on the left of the page. Ask your parents now if they have an pictures of that display which we can borrow.

Inter-Brigade Challenges

In the last update we talked about exchange visits and inter-brigade challenges and I am pleased to report that a very successful evening was had in Coleshill earlier in the year (so hello to anyone over there in sunny Warwickshire). The two branches took part in combination drills and ice breakers, competing both against each other as branches and then combined together in teams. Pictures of the event can be found in the 2002
Photo Gallery.

And we are still very pleased to say we are in contact more than ever with our colleagues in Victoria, Australia. You can find out more about them from their website.

Common Wealth Games
One of our members had the honour of carrying the Batton for the Jubilee Games. More on that in the future.

and finally ...

... why don't you use the guestbook to drop us a line and let us know what  you think of the site, any improvements or extra features you would like  to see in the future or even something you have written which you would  like to be added to the site yourself. We are always open to suggestions!
