The overall aim
of the RLSS is to prevent the loss of life through drowning and
asphyxiation. Over the years, our members have achieved awards at various
levels within the society.
The main award gained by our members is the
Bronze Medallion.
RLSS rules stipulate that members must be over the
age of 14 years old when working towards the Bronze Medallion. Both the
training and examination comes in two parts, first aid knowledge and
water based competences.
Before the water based skills can be
learned, participants must be competent in first aid skills to the level
of Life Support One. This includes
demonstrating :
|
|
-
the ability to effectively
seek further assistance / fetch help
-
checking a persons airway,
breathing and circulation
-
treatment for an unconscious
casualty (recovery position)
-
mouth-to-mouth/nose
ventilation
-
sequence of events involved
in resuscitation
-
treatment of vomiting,
choking, bleeding and shock
-
plus answer six random,
theoretical questions
|
|
Once the theory has been successfully passed, the
Lifesaving
Skills can be learned. The final exam involves demonstrating
any or all of the following:
|
-
Show an awareness for your
own safety at all times
-
A simple land based and
water based rescue using a float
-
Tow a casualty 50 meters
within a time limit whilst clothed
-
Escape and take defensive
action from an attacking casualty
-
Rescue an 'unconscious'
mannequin from at least 1.5m of water with in a time limit and
'resuscitate' upon retrieval
-
Show initiative and make use
of all available resources whilst attempting to rescue two
casualties
-
Have a clear understanding
of water safety, survival skills and rescue principals
|
 |
|
Members have displayed the wide range
of new found skills at presentation evenings in front of parents, senior
officers and other dignitaries within a specially constructed swimming
pool (many thanks to 'The Diving Initiative Limited')
