Knowing how to deal with an emergency situation is a skill which may need to be put to use at any time, whether it be in the high street or hill.

All of out members are required to learn First Aid as part of either the A.S.C. or D of E Awards, so it is built into the drill night training program as standard.

Depending on the members age will depend on what standard they train to. A.S.C. members will learn basic skills as they  should never be out of the reach of a trained instructor.  However, Gold members will find themselves in situations where instructors will be out of the immediate vicinity, therefore need to learn the skills of containing an emergency situation until professional help can be sought.

By the time the training is complete, members should know how to safely deal with the following:

  • First Aid Kit Contents

  • Burns & Scalds, including sunburn & blisters

  • Fractures, Sprains & Strains

  • Poisoning, including bites and stings

  • Bleeding & Shock

  • Resuscitation including C.P.R. & Mouth to Mouth

  • Unconsciousness & the Recovery Position

  • Hypothermia

  • Seeking further assistance

Senior members and instructors all take a Health & Safety Executive approved 'First Aid at Work' course.  This certificate is renewed at least every three years to ensure everybody it trained to the highest possible standard. Additional training given at this level includes:

  • Health & Safety Legislation

  • Record Keeping

  • Incident Management

  • Full assessment of casualty

  • Recognition of Illness
