A2 YFA have been involved in the award ever since we were formed over a decade ago. In that time we have seen over
250 members pass through the schemes highs & lows.
All of our members who are the age of 14 or over are expected to participate in the DofE. They are not forced to participate, but those who have achieved the award will tell you that it has proved to be a very valuable asset.
The award comprises of three levels and four different categories within each level.
Bronze level is open to all over the age of 14, Silver to all those over 15 and Gold, the ultimate level, to all those over 16.
The four different categories are:
-
Service - give help to the local community such as fire safety or life saving
-
Skills - learn a new skill, hobby or interest that can be developed over time such as playing a musical instrument, drawing or photography
-
Physical Recreation - take up a new sport or physical activity and show improvement over time
-
Expedition - train for, plan & complete a two, three or four day journey. Sound easy? Not if I tell you, you have to carry everything you will need on your
back!
Gold participants have a fifth category to complete, a
''Residential" spending 5 days away from home, participating in a purposeful project. Past examples include building paths in the Peak District & looking after special needs children.
The award has always been a great success. Each year has seen members attending format presentation ceremonies at Birmingham Council House to receive their award certificates. At Gold, members also attend functions at either Buckingham Palace or St. James’ Palace to collect their award from Prince Philip.
