Expeditions in the past have not just been completed on foot.  Successful ventures have also been completed using canoe.

The British Canoe union aim to train members in basic canoeing skills while encouraging safe and enjoyable paddling.

The main award gained is the Placid Water, Open Canoe, 1 Star Award. Training for the award comes in two parts. Part one involves learning the theory behind canoeing.  Topics covered here include:

  • Different canoe types and what are they designed for.

  • What equipment you need for safety? i.e. Buoyancy aid, first aid kit & paddle

  • Refresh first aid skills.

  • Learn how to maneuver the craft.

Part two covers the skills needed for the practical side of canoeing.  Skills learned here include:

  • Moving the canoe into and out of water.

  • Safely getting into and out of the canoe while it is in water.

  • Paddling straight forward and backwards

  • Quickly stopping the canoe

  • Turning the canoe in a complete circle on the spot

  • Moving sideways

The test is a minimum of 2 kilometer journey on placid water in the canoe, displaying to the assessor a good sense of water safety while demonstrating how to control a canoe safety & effectively.  As most of the canoeing out members do is on canals, canal lock safety had to also be learned.

Members achievements are recognised with a certificate and badge which is valid for three years.
