The
British Canoe union aim to train members in basic canoeing skills
while encouraging safe and enjoyable paddling.
The main award
gained is the Placid Water, Open Canoe, 1 Star Award. Training for the award comes in two
parts. Part one involves
learning the theory behind canoeing. Topics covered here
include:

Different
canoe types and what are they designed for.

What
equipment you need for safety? i.e. Buoyancy aid, first aid
kit & paddle
-
Refresh
first aid skills.

Learn
how to maneuver the craft.
Part two covers the
skills needed for the practical side of canoeing. Skills
learned here include:

Moving the canoe into and out of water.

Safely getting into and out of the canoe while it is in water.

Paddling
straight forward and backwards
-
Quickly
stopping the canoe
-
Turning
the canoe in a complete circle on the spot
-
Moving
sideways

The test is a minimum of
2 kilometer journey on placid water in the canoe, displaying to
the assessor a good sense of water safety while demonstrating how
to control a canoe safety & effectively. As most of the
canoeing out members do is on canals, canal lock safety had to
also be learned.
Members achievements are
recognised with a certificate and badge which is valid for three
years.
