Fires Categories

Fires can be grouped into four different categories. These are shown below:

Class Fires involve: Example Extinguish using: A combustible solids of an organic nature wood or paper water, foam or dry powder B liquids and liquefiable solids fat, wax, petrol or oil halon, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder C gases and liquefiable gases natural gas or LPG dry powder D metals or metal powders sodium or magnesium powdered graphite, powdered talc, soda ash, limestone, dry sandFires may be started by or involve electrical equipment but there is no electrical fire classification. This is because it is the material that is burning that denotes the classification, meaning that such fires must fall into one of the above four categories. If a fire does involve electricity, the normal procedure is to shut the power off and use a method of extinguishing appropriate to what is burning. Special non-conductive agents such as powders and gases can be used when the power supply can not be reached.
